Winter Wonderland!

Our Museum building stoically faces winter

This year’s weather is giving us a nice history lesson since it resembles typical conditions a century or so ago. Despite the cold and snow, volunteers and staff are busily preparing for the coming summer.

Volunteers Needed!

The Museum is offering a host of volunteer opportunities for Chebeaguers. Contribute to our community while chalking up some real-live experience!

High School and College Students: Do you need to report community service hours? How about working on our collections, writing descriptions of artifacts, cataloging and storing them in our computer system?

All ages: Greet visitors and friends, answer questions (“How many people live here year-round?” Answer: about 370.) Younger docents are welcome, paired with an adult.

Anyone in residence during the summer: Could you give three hours of your time in the gift shop, or as a docent, a couple of days a week?

These are just a few of the ways to choose times and tasks in volunteer community service. Of course, anyone can sign up for any task(s); we’d love to hear from you. Click here to fill out our volunteer interest form.

March Mystery Photo

What is the subject of the photo? Whose house?  Which road? About when was it taken? Send answers to [email protected].

February Mystery Photo Revealed

Bill Putnam, Erhhardt Groothoff, and Mary Holt recognized the house as did Bill Danielson.  They all knew that the Danielson’s house had been the Orchard Inn but none of them knew that in the early 1900s, George Selden Hill and his wife Mabel had operated a boarding house there known as the Central House.  The house was built c. 1875 for stone sloop captain, Rufus Hamilton and his wife Clarinda. Over the years the house was owned by the McCalls, Dennetts. Parker/Watsons and the Talientos, among others.
