CIHS is sponsoring the Memorial Day observance

The CIHS is sponsoring the annual Memorial Day observance.  We are focusing on veterans who served after World War 2 and before Vietnam.  If you or a family member or friend served during the years from 1945-1964 but did not serve during World War 2 or Vietnam after August 1964, please send your information and photos to [email protected] by May 1st. We would love to include ANYONE with a Chebeague connection. For more information, please email [email protected].

Sylvia Hamilton Ross 1932-2025

The CIHS is saddened by the passing of Sylvia Hamilton Ross, who was a founder and incorporator of the Historical Society. She served the CIHS in various capacities including president and building committee member.  She wrote for the Sloops Log and collaborated on the Society’s musical, Chebeague in Fact, Fiction, and Folklore and much more!  She loved the island and represented what was best about Chebeague.  We’ll miss you Syl! Thanks for all you did for this community and CIHS.

April Mystery Photo

To make up for last month, here is an easier one! Please use our new email, [email protected], if you know anything about the picture including: location, subject, and people pictured.  A special acknowledgement that Amy Bonville and Melissa Doughty both identified the February 2025 photo, but their emails “were lost in the mail”!

March Mystery Photo Revealed

No one attempted to guess the March Mystery photo! The tree was located on North Road in front of Lisa Tucker’s and was purported to be the oldest on the island at the time the postcard was made.. The old part of Lisa’s house was built for Dorcas Hamilton Ross circa mid to late 1830s, after her husband and two sons were lost after their vessel, the Chancellor hit a ledge near Boston during a snow squall. She was the daughter of Ambrose Hamilton Esq. and granddaughter of Ambrose and Deborah Hamilton. The house was located on her father’s farm. His home was below the Grunkos’ on Carter’s Point Rd. Tommy Calder’s former house can be seen in the distance.
