A Plea from the Cookbook Committee

The Historical Society’s Cookbook Committee is hard at work collecting recipes for a new Chebeague Island cookbook. We know that cooking is central to island life. Whether we’re whipping up a weekday meal or gathering family and friends for a special occasion, cooking on Chebeague requires planning, shopping in advance and time in the kitchen.

Previous versions of the Chebeague Island cookbook are still widely used and loved. Our vision is to produce an updated collection of recipes that reflects how we eat on the island today.  These recipes can range from old favorites such as your grandmother’s baked beans or your father’s baked bread …. to your own, newest unique creations.   To achieve our goal of a true representation of the community, we need recipes from everyone who lives here, both year-round and seasonally, and from cooks both young and old. They need not be fancy or even original. “Borrowed” recipes will be gladly accepted!

Please share your recipes with us before January 31st! You may email them to [email protected]. You may also drop them off at the Library. We realize that many of us don’t have our best recipes written down. Someone on the Cookbook Committee will be happy to help get your recipe in writing if necessary. Just call or email for assistance.

Finally, we’d love to add some local color to the flavors of Chebeague. Please include any stories of how your recipe evolved or how it connects you to the island. 25 words or less would be appreciated.
